Separate ornament and opening
Trace the applique's outside shape and the garment's finished opening on the same full-size sheet. Identify where attachment may bridge, cover or restrict that opening. An attractive outside width says little about the usable space through which the garment must pass.
Include the fastening plan
Tell the maker where any slit, zip, button or other planned opening will be located. Ask whether the applique overlaps that area. A decorative bridge may require a different construction or selection; do not assume the supplied ornament includes a functional closure or can be cut safely at its centre.
Explore the productsUse a representative fit trial
Ask the maker to test dressing and removal on an appropriate garment sample, with consent from the person trying it. Avoid pulling the opening to force a pass. Fit and comfort should be assessed by the garment maker for the intended wearer and size range; there is no universal head-opening figure supplied by the product photograph.
Approve the assembled design
Keep images of the garment open and closed, plus the applique reference and approved size. Record any unresolved fit or fastening issue before purchasing. If the garment neckline changes, revisit the ornament approval even when the same applique product is being reordered.
A practical comparison
| Part | Check | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Base garment | Finished usable opening | Full-size pattern reference |
| Applique | Any bridge across the opening | Placed sample photo |
| Assembly | Dressing and fastening | Maker-approved garment trial |
Your buying checklist
- Trace the usable opening
- Include the fastening location
- Test without forcing the fit
- Recheck after neckline changes
