Draw the three areas separately
Mark the neck opening, the applique outline and the available garment area. Include the centre front and shoulder line as reference points. The applique’s overall width is not the same as the neckline opening, and an image without scale cannot reliably establish either one.
Ask for the measurements that answer the fit question
Request overall width and height, then the key distances your maker needs around the opening or lower point. State the measurement direction and units. If the supplier sends a ruler image, check that the same reference points are being used rather than comparing different parts of the shape.
Explore the productsReview each relevant garment size
A decoration that fits one pattern size may need a different placement on another. Ask the maker to check the smallest and largest intended sizes or another appropriate size set. Do not assume a symmetrical catalogue display means the piece fits every neckline automatically.
Approve placement before ordering the count
Keep the measured sketch, code and colour together. Confirm whether the selected reference represents one component or a set, and ask about the current selling unit and minimum. Any cutting, reshaping or attachment proposal should be reviewed for that actual item rather than inferred from the drawing alone.
A practical comparison
| Area | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Outer outline | Space occupied by the decoration |
| Neck opening | Clearance required by the garment |
| Placement area | Space available on the pattern |
Your buying checklist
- Separate opening and outer outline.
- Define the measuring points.
- Check the intended size range.
- Save the approved placement sketch.
