Mark structural references
Draw centre front, shoulder seams and the finished neckline on the garment pattern. Add the applique outline at actual size. These references make measured position repeatable, even where one shoulder or panel is deliberately different. Do not use the centre of a cropped product photograph as a garment placement instruction.
Compare the complete silhouette
Show the whole front with sleeves, openings and major decoration indicated. Try a small set of labelled placements rather than shifting the applique without a record. A position can be mathematically central but visually dominated by another garment feature; the designer should approve that relationship intentionally.
Explore the productsCheck in the wearing position
Review a representative sample on an appropriate form or wearer, with consent. Look for twisting, edge lifting and contact near the neck while the garment sits normally. A flat paper arrangement cannot establish comfort or how the applied ornament behaves with the actual fabric layers.
Record a repeatable placement
Save the chosen version with measured distances to stable pattern points and a full-front image. Keep separate rules for sizes if the maker determines they are needed. Recheck any change in applique size, garment neckline or shoulder construction instead of carrying over one unqualified centred instruction.
A practical comparison
| Reference | Purpose | Keep |
|---|---|---|
| Centre and seams | Repeatable measured position | Marked full-size pattern |
| Whole silhouette | Intended visual balance | Approved front view |
| Worn sample | Position during normal wear | Maker and designer review |
