Cut edges on embroidered fabric: inspect a sample before bulk cutting

Cutting an embroidered fabric changes the edge that the workshop has to handle. A catalogue photograph cannot confirm how every proposed cut will behave. Before bulk cutting, identify where the pattern crosses open ground, threads and decoration, then have the maker assess a separate sample intended for that purpose.

Draw the proposed cutting path

Mark the cut line and finished seam line on a sample sketch. Include a region representative of the actual garment, rather than choosing only an easy plain area. Ask which threads or decorative units the cut crosses. This helps the maker choose what must be assessed before cutting the main material.

Inspect before disturbing threads

Photograph the sample front and back before the trial. Observe the newly cut edge without pulling at it or removing threads indiscriminately. A loose end and a continuing embroidery connection may require different handling. Let the maker decide the appropriate finishing approach for the exact construction.

Trial the planned finish

Use the intended seam allowance and compatible finishing method on the test piece. Review appearance, bulk and handling on both sides. A finish that looks tidy on a straight sample may need another check at a curve. Avoid prescribing heat sealing or adhesives without confirmed compatibility with the material and decoration.

Keep a cutting instruction

Retain the approved edge sample, images and maker's notes with the product reference. State which cuts were tested and which remain unresolved. If the design depends on separating motifs, ask whether that use is suitable before ordering; full-width embroidery is not automatically a supply of detachable appliques.
