Wax print pockets and plackets: plan visible motif matching

A pocket can interrupt a large print even when the garment body is cut correctly. Buyers supplying tailors should agree where visual continuity matters before estimating fabric. The aim is an achievable placement brief, with priority areas and an approved sample, rather than a promise that every seam will match.

Work from the finished outline

Trace the finished pocket and its fold line onto transparent paper. Place it over a photograph or physical sample at actual scale. Include the garment front behind it. The cutting edge contains allowances and may hide the precise part that will remain visible after sewing, so mark both outlines clearly.

Give the placket its own view

Review the garment closed and open. A folded placket may hide a motif or create two neighbouring fragments. Identify the visible centre line, overlap and button positions with the tailor. Avoid specifying a print alignment from a flat unfolded strip when the finished construction will put different areas on show.

Rank the matching points

For a trial shirt, the buyer might prioritise the chest pocket and centre front while accepting a break at side seams. This is an example brief, not a product feature. Record each accepted mismatch. The cutting team can then estimate material for the agreed result instead of guessing what the customer considers important.

Approve before multiplying

Sew one representative pocket and placket using the intended pattern. Keep a full-front photo and close detail with the product reference. Calculate bulk requirements from the approved layout and size mix. Ask about sale units and available cuts separately; a larger total length does not itself prove that uninterrupted matching areas are available.
