Ask for one complete repeat
Request a view that includes the same identifiable point twice in the length direction and, if relevant, across the width. Ask for the distances between those points. A cropped detail is not enough to calculate repeat spacing, and a folded display may conceal the actual sequence.
Mark the garment’s important positions
Identify centre front, neckline, sleeve top and any border that must align. Decide which motif belongs at each position and which areas may vary. This is a design decision for your maker. Do not treat an attractive arrangement in the catalogue photograph as a ready-made cutting plan.
Explore the productsCompare matching with free placement
Imagine two front panels that must meet with the same flower at the seam. The maker may need to shift a panel to reach the next suitable repeat. Free placement allows more flexibility. Ask for separate estimates for the intended arrangement rather than adding an arbitrary percentage to every order.
Retain the placement decision
Keep a marked sketch and the reference beside the quantity calculation. If you later change the garment size, sleeve or motif position, have the requirement checked again. A confirmed fabric length and a successful placement plan are separate decisions, especially when several garment sizes will use the same design.
A practical comparison
| Area | Decision to record |
|---|---|
| Centre front | Which motif should be visible? |
| Joining seam | Must the pattern meet? |
| Sleeves | Must both sides mirror or match? |
