Buying 100% cotton wax prints: what the composition does and does not tell you

The phrase 100% cotton answers the fibre-composition question. It does not describe every aspect of a fabric's behaviour or feel. Wholesale buyers comparing wax prints should keep confirmed catalogue specifications beside a short list of performance questions, then assess the actual sample for its intended garment use.

Write the known specification

For our wax category, the confirmed facts are 100% cotton, 115 cm width, six yards per piece and a minimum of one piece. Preserve those units in the enquiry. Do not extend this specification to embroidery, trims or necklines, whose materials and order conditions require their own confirmation.

Describe feel in usable terms

Instead of writing only soft or premium, explain the desired result: a structured sleeve, a fluid gathered skirt or comfortable contact at the neck. Compare labelled samples side by side. A crisp feel or a glossy photograph does not by itself establish fabric weight, finishing treatment or a certified performance level.

Ask about the missing properties

If weight matters, request the value and unit, such as grams per square metre, for the exact reference. Ask for applicable care information and any available test evidence. Do not infer colourfastness, shrinkage, organic certification or suitability for a particular finishing process from the cotton percentage alone.

Keep sample observations separate

Record what you observed, how you handled the sample and which questions remain unanswered. Agree any proposed care trial with the supplier before using a sample destructively. A workshop trial can guide a purchase decision, but a single informal observation should not be presented to customers as a laboratory certification.
